In the context of la Biennale di Venezia 2015, Josephine Turalba presents her work, Scandals III: Walk With Me, at the Palazzo Mora as part of the European Cultural Centre’s exhibition, Personal Structures – Crossing Borders.
Her work showcases an idiosyncratic assembly of bullets casings interwoven and adulterated into studio portraits and press photographs that reflect the many historical forces that have taken hold of cultural practices, values and identity. Turalba invites us to “walk with her” using her sandal creations made of bullet shells to reflect on the connection of pain and beauty, simulating collective spaces, like nations today with shared histories of colonialism, dictatorship and all sorts of subjugation seen in the 20th century.
The EUROPEAN CULTURAL CENTRE exhibition “Personal Structures – Crossing Borders” shows the commonness and differences between Europeans, this in Dialogue with works of Non-Europeans. In addition the exhibition stimulates a more conscious relationship from the spectator towards his daily surrounding aiming to increase the awareness of their own personal Existence as human beings influenced by a specific Culture within Space and Time.
