‘A Language from the Garden,’ new work by Transart External Examiner John Newling opens January 2017 at Nymans Gallery and Garden

Nymans — A Language from the Garden
16th January–31st May, 2017

The project involves the construction of a unique Nymans’ typeface – A Language from the Garden – produced in collaboration with Joff and Ollie Studio. Each letter of the garden language will have its specific location and species origin.

The digital and material language will be seen in several incarnations. The
‘alphabet’ trail of twenty six sites becomes a walk for people to explore both the garden and the language of its plant species.

In this manner the language is both a connection to the history of the garden and a living set of shapes and possibilities within the garden’s borders.

The artwork will see visitors follow an ‘alphabet trail’ of twenty six sites taking them on a journey around the garden, exploring the language of its plant species and discovering the origin of each letter. It will be at one and the same time an alphabet, a font, and a physical reminder of the wonder of plants.

The project will open from the 16th of January–31st May 2017 in various spaces in the amazing Nymans garden and house.

“I’m lucky enough to have a garden and I consider it to be a laboratory of wonder where I learn a lot, both spiritual and material.” -John Newling
