Honolulu—Transart guest artist Kirsten Rae Simonsen presents new work in her solo exhibition Encampments opening this Friday July 4, 2014 at The Arts at Marks Garage.

Interested in notions of utopias, dystopias, and the built environment, Simonsen creates work that explores architectural displacement, private versus public property, and the promises of suburban and pastoral fantasies.

Encampments features Simonsen’s most recent body of work: acrylic, graphite and colored pencil on wood panel or paper paintings showing “temporary autonomous zones,” itinerant recreational and festive spaces that provide a sense of community in an otherwise inhospitable environment. Sparse landscapes of uninhabited festival grounds prompt the question: Has the fun ended or is it yet to begin?

Kirsten Rae Simonsen received her MFA from the University of Chicago (2003) after studying traditional painting and drawing at Sekolah Tinggi Seni Indonesia (STSI), Bali, Indonesia (1999) and earning a MA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1997). Well-known for her wall drawing installations, Simonsen exhibits widely, both nationally and internationally, most recently at the Honolulu Museum of Art, Honolulu; Galerie Jan Dhaese, Ghent; and Brandeis University, Waltham, MA. Simonsen is represented by Artspace Gallery in New Haven, CT as well as Cedar Street Galleries in Honolulu, HI, where she lives with her husband and bird.

Transart looks forward to hosting Simonsen during the summer Berlin residency. The artist will present on her practice and lead a group critique for students during the August 8 installment of the program’s Pecha Kucha series.
