MFA candidate Ato Malinda is featured in “The Divine Comedy: Heaven, Hell, Purgatory Revisited by Contemporary African Artists” on view at the Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt (MMK) from March 21 to July 27, 2014.

Inspired by Dante’s epic fourteenth century poem The Divine Comedy, the exhibition includes work exploring theological, philosophical and moral issues from the artists’ diverse cultural and religious perspectives. The show spans three floors, each one devoted to heaven, hell, or purgatory; all three represent a myriad of otherworldly visualizations of the afterlife. By presenting African artists engaging with “an incunable of European literature,” the exhibition works to re-conceptualize Dante’s existential themes in a contemporary transnational context.

Curated by Simon Njami in cooperation with the MMK, “The Divine Comedy” travels to four additional venues worldwide. A program of discussions, workshops and films accompanies the exhibition.
