Mikkel Niemann at Power Station of Art

Mikkel Niemann in ” The One Minutes on Tour” on view until July 13, 2014

Shanghai — Transart MFA student Mikkel Niemann is participating in the exhibition The One Minutes on Tour currently on view at the Power Station of Art.

The show takes its name from The One Minutes, a global platform for moving images based at the Sandberg Instituut, Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Focused on exploring the perception and comprehension of film and video, The One Minutes started as a student experiment in 1999 and has since produced and distributed over 10,000 works created in over 100 countries worldwide.

The One Minutes on Tour celebrates the program’s fifteenth anniversary. The exhibition presents over 300 videos lasting exactly 60 seconds and an interactive installation in which museum visitors can film one minute videos of themselves in addition to photographs and other printed material documenting the history of The One Minute.

Trained as both a martial artist and a visual artist, Mikkel Niemann creates mixed media work engaged in physical assault in order to explore notions of fragility, destruction, and transformation. Niemann was born in 1971 in Copenhagen, where he currently lives and works. He studied architecture at the University of East London and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen before matriculating at Transart in 2012. He is a member of the artist’s society Kunstnersamfundet.

Power Station of Art is the first state-owned museum on mainland China dedicated to contemporary art. The One Minutes on Tour is on view until July 13, 2014.
