Chicago—Miriam Schaer (MFA 2014) was named Acting Director of the Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Book & Paper graduate program at Columbia College Chicago for the 2014-2015 academic year.

A Brooklyn-based multimedia book artist, Schaer uses items of clothing to explore issues of femininity, society and spirituality. She joined Columbia College Chicago as a lecturer in 2009, prior to which she taught book arts at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. In addition, she has held visiting artist and lecturer positions at Sarah Lawrence College Bronxville, NY; University of Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro; Memphis College of Art and Design, Memphis, TN; and Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers Center for Innovative Paper and Print, New Brunswick, NJ.

Schaer’s work has been exhibited as widely as she has taught, including at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York; Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, NY; San Francisco Center for Book Arts; Museum für angewandte Kunst Frankfurt (MAK), Frankfurt; Cheongju International Craft Biennale, Cheongju, South Korea; and Imagining the Book Biennale 2007, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt. Her work also appears in the public collections worldwide.

Before earning a MFA from Transart, Schaer studied graphic design and illustration at the School of Visual Arts and art history at Boston University. She holds a BFA in fiber from Philadelphia College of Art (now The University of the Arts).
