New Alanna Lockward Publication

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic—Transart faculty member Alanna Lockward is pleased to announce her newest publication Un Haití Dominicano: Tatuajes fantasmas y narrativas bilaterales (1994-2014) [A Dominican Haiti: Ghost Tattoos and Bilateral Narratives (1994-2014)].

Published by Editorial Santuario and the Museo de Arte Moderno (MAM), the anthology presents writing on racism and genderism as well as political and economic issues on the island of Hispaniola. Lockward uses decoloniality as a theoretical framework to examine the relationship between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which according to Walter Mignolo, affords the opportunity to “let go of hierarchies that are not ontological but modern/colonial fictions.” Cover art and illustrations by artist Raúl Recio accompany the texts.

From the Dominican Republic and based in Berlin, Alanna Lockward is a writer, critic and curator focused on critical race theory, decolonial aesthetics and black feminism. She is the founding director of ArtLabour Archives, a cultural organization producing situation-specific art events and exhibitions worldwide since 1997; associate curator of the post-migrant theatre space Ballhaus Naunynstraße; CEO of the Transnational Decolonial Institute; and a columnist for Lockward studied communication, art and dance at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Xochimilco, México City (D.F.); Universität der Künste Berlin; and Royal Academy of Dance, London, respectively. Previous publications include Marassá y la nada (Sanctuary 2013) and Apremio: apuntes sobre el pensamiento y la creación contemporánea desde el Caribe (Cendeac 2006).
