Interdisciplinary Macedonian artist Zoran Poposki’s latest project entitled “Theoria” is based on the principles of multilevel research in the field of cultural and social theories and practices, asking yourself as an analyst and critic of the multitude of topics relating to identity, territory, public space etc.
The current series postkonceptualni drawings titled “Theory” which is focused and which develop from 2015 onwards, so far contains 65 works (of which this his 14th consecutive solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Macedonia is presented a choice of 22) and according to the author presents a series of portraits of “monumental figures from the world of philosophy, literature and art, and his personal beacons, Friedrich Nietzsche and Virginia Woolf to Walter Benjamin and Judith Butler.”
The work of this series, “Melancholy (Nietzsche)” won the award for drawing Artslant, the world’s leading network for contemporary art. Three other works from this series drawings, portraits of philosophers Theodor Adorno and Gilles Deleuze and the artist Joseph Beuys, on several occasions published in the British newspaper “The Guardian” in the selection of Flavia Frigeri (curator of contemporary international art in the Tate Museum in London ) and Emily Sargent (curator of Velcom collection in London) and Shoair Mavlian (curator of contemporary photography at Tate modern in London).
The exhibition runs until 15 July 2017.
Dr. Zoran Poposki is an international award winning transdisciplinary artist, educator and researcher. Born in Skopje in 1974, Poposki lives and works in Hong Kong.
Poposki explores topics related to cultural translation, liminalonsta, identity and public media of drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, performance, video art and publishing.
His works have been shown at 70 international exhibitions and festivals, including: ArtBazel Hong Kong, 30 Biennial Ljubljana, Asia Contemporary Art Show, Thyssen Bornamisza 21 Art Contemporary Vienna, Institute of Contemporary Arts London, Museu Villa Velja Portugal, Denmark National School for performing arts in Copenhagen National Museum of Montenegro, Sergei Kurjokin Museum of modern art in St. Petersburg, Ljubljana Local Museum, Museo de Arte de Ponce San Juan in Puerto Rico, the National gallery of Macedonia, Museum of contemporary umet ness Skopje, Skopje Museum – Open Graphic Studio Festival Artstejs in Slovenia Shardzha University in the United Arab Emirates, etc. His public art projects are displayed on urban LED screens, billboards and posters in New York, Hong Kong, Dublin, Skopje, etc.
He exhibited alongside the world’s top names in contemporary art production, as Gerhard Richter, Nam June Pike, Alora and Kalzadija, Xu Bing, Rirkrit Tiravanija, etc. His works have been selected for exhibitions from the world’s top curators and critics like Donald Caspian (Professor Emeritus of Art History and Philosophy, State University of New York), Elizabeth Sasman (Curator, Whitney Museum, New York) Deborah Cullen (Director and Chief Curator Gallery of Columbia University, New York), etc.
Master Arts in New Media (TI / DUC, New York and Linz, Austria) and PhD studies in culture (EUBAM, Skopje). Completed a study stays at the School of Visual Arts in New York, Berlin WooLoo, Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland (USA), Vermont Studio Center (USA), etc.
He has won several international awards for art, including: Prize CEC Artslink (New York), ID + Consol Sondika (Spain), WSJ Art Grant (USA) Artslant Award selection jury, etc.
His works are found in many international collections, including Videotazh Media Art Kolekshn Hong Kong Foundation Luciano Benetton in Italy, archived in AUP archives (project e-flux in cooperation Serpentajn Gallery in London), and represented in the Saatchi Art Kolekshn .
