Transart Advisor and guest faculty Simon Pope, has just been awarded a DPhil at The Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford.
Simon’s interest is in participation, dialogue, the more-than-human, and ecological thinking, as they relate to contemporary art and creative practice. He has just completed a practice-led doctoral project, entitled Who Else Takes Part? Admitting the more-than-human into participatory art, was undertaken through a series of artworks, including a book written in correspondence with those who participated in these projects. These, and other interlocutors, took part in Simon’s viva voce examination – a participatory event held at the Quaker meeting house in Oxford, which tested the conventions for presenting and examining practice-led doctoral work. Simon’s project was supervised by Dr. Anthony Gardner, (editor of the MIT journal ArtMargins) and artist, Prof. Daria Martin, with additional supervision by Emily Pethick of The Showroom, London.
