Freya Björg Olafson Premieres “HYPER_”

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada—Transart alum Freya Björg Olafson recently premiered the multimedia work HYPER_, 2014 at the 9th annual WNDX Festival of Moving Image.

HYPER_ explores the limits of perception through “expanded choreography.” Featuring live dancers against a backdrop of large-scale video projections, the work shape shifts between two- and three-dimensional representations of the body. Lighting design by Hugh Conacher, including the use of UV light, and 3D glasses enhance the dreamscape effect of the performance.

Based in Canada, Freya Björg Olafson is an intermedia artist creating video, audio, painting and performances. Her work is presented and exhibited internationally at venues such as the High Performance Rodeo, Calgary’s International Festival of the Arts (2013); Medea Electronique / Onassis Cultural Center, Athens (2012); The National Arts Centre, Ottawa (2011); Sequences Real Time Media Arts Festival, Reykjavik (2011); Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, North Carolina (2010); OchoYmedio / Alas de la Danza, Quito (2010); and Tangente – Laboratoire des Movements Contemporains, Montreal (2010). Her most recent award winning work AVATAR achieved international success, touring across seven provinces and five states in North America, three cities in Ecuador and six countries in Europe. Olafson earned a MFA in new media from Transart in 2007 and a BFA in dance from the University of Winnipeg in 2004. She is currently booking tour dates for HYPER_.

The annual WNDX Festival of Moving Image exhibits new experimental media including short films, installations and live cinematic performances from all over the world.
