Interview with Transart faculty Nicolás Dumit Estevez on the Visual Aids project at El Museo del Barrio, New York

As “social practice art” becomes more commonly accepted and programmed in museums and art institutions, artists continue to expand conversations and provoke dialogue about public health—and HIV/AIDS in particular— in the art world through new platforms. In this vein, artist and curator  Nicolás Dumit Estevez describes his “participation in the curatorial field as a form of community building, and as an alternative voice in a market-driven art establishment.” For Visual AIDS, Nicolás discusses his Office Hours (OH) project with artist Ivan Monforte, who in turn discusses his There But For The Grace Of God Go I, which provides free and confidential rapid HIV screenings and referrals to the general public in the context of an artwork.
