Transart alum David Chalmers Alesworth A.R.B.S. (MFA 2010) will be featured in the 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art on view from May 29, 2014 through August 3, 2014 at four venues in Berlin and Berlin-Mitte: Haus am Waldsee, Museen Dahlem – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, KW Institute for Contemporary Art (KW) and Crash Pad c/o KW.
A member of the Royal British Society of British Sculptors and the Arts Council of Pakistan, Alesworth is well-known for mixed media site-specific installations made in Karachi in the 1990s, working with artists and crafts people to create truck paintings and shrine-like shipping containers that transcended conventional binaries of high art and popular craft, modern and traditional, local and foreign. More recently, Alesworth creates “textile interventions,” embroidering vintage carpet fabrics with the images of historical works of art and maps.
Currently based in Lahore, Alesworth teaches at Beaconhouse National University, leads art school study tours worldwide and is a horticultural consultant to Agha Khan Cultural Services. He studied sculpture in the United Kingdom at Brooklands Technical College, Epsom School of Art and Design and Wimbledon School of Art (now Wimbledon College of Arts) before matriculating at Transart Institute.
Curated by Juan A. Gaitán, the 8th Berlin Biennale brings together international contemporary art that explores the confluence of historical narrative and present-day lived experience. Visit the biennale website for more information about each venue.
