Berlin — Transart Institute is pleased to announce the exhibition Intermezzo #3 opening this Saturday August 9, 2014 at Mila Kunstgalerie.
Intermezzo #3 is the third and final show at Mila Kunstgalerie featuring Transart artists earning their MFA degree during the institute’s 2014 summer residency. Curated by Katharina Maria Raab, director of Mila Kunstgalerie, Intermezzo #3 presents work by Martin Budny, James Charlton, Christopher Danowski, Lisa Osborn and Laurel Terlesky, all of whom engage with issues of perception as related to the human body. These five graduating Transart artists are placed in dialogue with Berlin-based artist Aleks Slota.
Lisa Osborn primarily works in clay, sculpting “emotional anatom[ical]” human figures. Laurel Terlesky mixed media sculptures explore tactile knowledge by encouraging sensory experience through sound and material. Employed as a flight attendant, Martin Budny uses his work experience as a departure point to explore notions of place, personality vis-à-vis consumerism and alienation. James Charlton’s performative actions engage the gallery visitor and evoke the conceptual practices of the 1960s. Similarly, Christopher Danowski performance and video installation suggests the presented, and recorded, idea is more important than the finished product.
Katharina Maria Raab is a Berlin-based gallerist, independent curator and art educator. In addition to directing Mila Kunstgalerie, Raab organizes exhibitions on behalf of the international contemporary art organization artMbassy as well as the alternative contemporary art space The Wand. Since 2007, Raab has taught art history at the Center for Continuing Education at Freie Universität Berlin. She also currently lectures on modern and contemporary art at the Akademie der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin.
