Transart Faculty Nicolás Dumit Estévez Teaches Seminar at Queens Museum of Art

Transart faculty member Nicolás Dumit Estévez is teaching a six-week seminar on performance art and art in everyday life at the Queens Museum of Art in New York from 12 to 2 pm on Sundays May 18 through June 22, 2014.

Entitled Life As Material for Art and Vice-Versa, the seminar includes performance exercises, audiovisual presentations and a survey of performance artists and collectives based in the United States and the Americas. Tasked with practicing consciousness in their everyday activities, participants use their daily observations to create actions, performances, interventions and new experiences.

Born in 1967 in the Dominican Republic, Estévez lives and works in the Bronx borough of New York City. He is an interdisciplinary artist inspired by the quotidian and working in performance and mixed media installations. Estévez’s work has been exhibited widely throughout the New York City area at venues including P.S.1/Clocktower Gallery, El Museo del Barrio, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Cynthia Broan Gallery, Henry Street Settlement/Abrons Arts Center, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Queens Museum of Art, The Newark Museum, Dixon Place, P.S.122, Exit Art, Cuchifritos, HEREart and Smack Mellon.

Life as Material for Art and Vice-Versa is part of The New New Yorkers Program, which works with the Queens Library to produce educational classes for immigrant adult communities in Queens.
