New York—Transart alum Victoria Estok (MFA 2011) recently returned to the Riverside Drive Viaduct in Harlem for the third installment of a public art intervention series by the West Harlem Art Fund.

Coinciding with the annual all-night arts festival Nuit Blanche in Paris, Under the Viaduct in Harlem’s White Light featured Overtones and Undercurrents, a collaborative experimental composition by Victoria Estok and Ryan Pratt. Utilizing the acoustics of the Riverside Drive Viaduct at 125th Street, Estok and Pratt directionally project, explore and fill the tunnel with manipulated partials from direct field recordings taken from the surrounding environment.

Victoria Estok is an artist and environmental worker exploring how sound and voice affect our perception and decision making. Driven by intuition and curiosity, she has found and lost herself in numerous institutions, organizations, national parks, and libraries around the world. An advocate and scholar of non-traditional education, she believes in deconstructing authority and questioning power. Estok takes a playful and poetic approach to her work, using installations, interventions, and compositions to ask listeners to reexamine that to which they give their attention. She currently teaches sound art in New Media at Purchase College, State University of New York.

Ryan Pratt is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in composition at Columbia University, where he teaches Music Humanities. Stemming from an early interest in improvisation and percussion, Pratt’s music explores literal and metaphorical notions of limit and measurement, most often obscuring regularity in time and meter while simultaneously tapping the unique spectral potential of the instrumental-performer medium in each piece. He has recently written for local New York City-based ensembles such as Ensemble Pamplemousse, Wet Ink, Ekmeles, and Yarn/Wire. Pratt participates in summer festivals at home and abroad, most recently in Croatia, France, Germany and Finland.
